Designing an E-learning ESP Course: Possibilities and Challenges

+++Languages%2C+History%2C++Geography%29%3B+Economics%2C+Legal+Sciences%2C+and++Management%3B+and+Engineering.++However%2C+courses++concerned+with+the++teaching+of+languages+remain+underrepresented.+At+the++time+of+writing%2C+++out+of+an+overall+number+of+190+modules+being+offered+online%2C+there++were++only+two+modules++of+English%2C+and+the+main+institutions+to+benefit++were+the+Higher++Institutes+for++Technological+Studies.%3C%2Fspan%3E%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv+class%3D%22MsoNormal%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cspan+lang%3D%22EN-US%22%3EBeing++initially+an+ESP+teacher%2C+I++had+the++opportunity+in+2004+to+design+an++online+course+for+postgraduate+students++specializing+in++%22Internet+and++Multimedia+Information%22+%28IMI%29.+In+the+academic+year++2003-2004%2C+the+VUT++felt++the+need+to+offer+IMI+students+a+specialised+English+course.+The++idea++was+to+offer+students++an+English+course+to+introduce+them+to+the++kind+of+English+they+would++need+to+deal+with++in+their+target++situation%2C+as+future+engineers+in+multimedia+information++and+the++Internet.++It+was+a+completely+new+challenge.%3C%2Fspan%3E%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv+class%3D%22MsoNormal%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cspan+lang%3D%22EN-US%22%3EWe++started+our+design+process+by++taking+into++consideration+the+opinions++of+the+primary+subject+specialists%2C+as++expressed+in+a++questionnaire++given+4+months+before+the+process+started.+The+results++indicated+a++clear++need+for+the+development+of+reading+skills+and+for+accessing+the++highly++technical++terminology+and+literature+in+the+specialty+area+on++the+part+of++potential+users+of+this++course.+In+a+traditional++situation%2C+this+would+have+been+enough+to+start++the+design+process.+++However%2C+for+the+present+course%2C+which+we+called+Anglais+Technique%2C+we+++still+had+to+work++on+the+online+component.+For+us%2C+using+the+technology++was+not+an+end+in++itself%2C+it+was+a++means+that+should+be+used+in+the++best+possible+way+to+respond+to+needs%2C++primarily+to++increase+the++accountability+of+the+course%2C+not+only+at+the+level+of++content%2C+but++also+in++terms+of+course+features+offering+time+flexibility+in+the+use++of+the++online+course%2C+quick++communication+with+the+tutor+via+e-mail++and+forum+sessions%2C+and+less++time+attending+classes.%3C%2Fspan%3E%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv+class%3D%22MsoNormal%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cspan+lang%3D%22EN-US%22%3EIn++2006%2C+still+via+the+VUT%2C+I++benefited+from+a++unique+experience+by++taking+an+online+course+in+critical+thinking.++During+the+ten+weeks+of+++the+course%2C+around+30+participants+from+different+parts+of+the+world+%2823+++finished+the++course%29%2C+came+together+in+a+virtual+asynchronous++classroom.+We+were++involved+in+readings%2C++reactions+to+readings%2C++discussion%2C+assignments+consisting+of+analysis%2C++interpretation%2C+and+++synthesis+of+information+in+those+assigned+readings%2C+comments+on+each+++others%27+work%2C++reactions+to+peers%27+positions+%28the+instructor+insisted+on++maintaining++polite+discourse++between+the+participants+as+part+of++evaluation+was+on+the+formulation+as++well+as+the++content+of+our++ideas%29.+Another+feature+of+the+course+was+the+possibility++for++continuing++education%3B+indeed%2C+once+the+basic+principles+and+premises++have+been++established%2C+through++links+to+other+websites+the+course++offered+the+possibility+to+continue++reading+and++researching+on+the++topic+as+we+had+access+to+articles%2C+tips%2C+lessons%2C++and+lesson+plans.+++The+best+part+of+it+was+when+by+the+end+of+the+course%2C+we+were+gradually+++left+to+our+own++devices%2C+creating+better+lesson+plan+for+teaching++critical+thinking+in++our+own+contexts%2C++and+working+on+our+own+project++for+developing+a+Program+for+teaching++this+component+in++our+own++departments.+Overall%2C+this+experience+enabled+me+to+come+back++with+%22new++eyes%22%2C++see+distance+education+from+the+perspective+of+the+learner%2C+and++have++first-hand+experience++about+those+features+of+pedagogy+that+make++learning+online+an+enjoyable++and+beneficial++experience.%3C%2Fspan%3E%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv+class%3D%22MsoNormal%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cspan+lang%3D%22EN-US%22%3EThis++paper+evaluates+this++initial+experience+of++distance+education+in+the++local+context%3B+it+highlights+the+possibilities++that+online++courses++offer%2C+particularly+with+ESP+students%3B+it+also+covers+the++potential++problematic++areas+that+need+to+be+addressed+%28e.g.%2C+cultural%2C+pedagogic%2C++changing++roles+of+universities++and+teachers+etc.%29+if+courses+are+to++take+maximum+advantage+of+this+new++medium.+%3C%2Fspan%3E%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3C%2Fdiv%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv+class%3D%22chapter%22%3E%0D%0A+%3Ch3%3E%0D%0APossibilities+of+Distance+Education%3C%2Fh3%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv+class%3D%22MsoNormal%22%3E%0D%0A%3Cspan+lang%3D%22EN-US%22%3EThe++literature+on+the+use+of++technology+in++education+in+general+has++established+a+list+of+possibilities+for++technology-%2Fcomputer-++%2Fmultimedia-%2Fhypermedia-based+educational+programs+%28words+to+be+used+++interchangea
